If you or a friend or family has recently experienced whiplash, chiropractics should be one of the treatment options to keep in mind. Whiplash is the effect muscles in the neck, spinal column, and back which have been subjected to extreme and sudden force or motion. Some of the leading causes of whiplash are car accidents, where the body experiences whiplash even with safety mechanisms in the automobile such as the seat belt.
Not yet
One of the usual problems with whiplash is that it takes time for the symptoms to emerge. Once the symptoms of the condition emerges, however, the problem has usually already damaged other peripheral areas or the strained muscles and ligaments and the misaligned bones may have already repositioned themselves into certain dangerous and very painful bone patterns. Because of this, it is recommended to visit a chiropractor even before symptoms begin presenting themselves. Some of the usual symptoms that can eventually develop include vertigo, nausea, ringing in the ears, tingling and numbness, fatigue and irritability, and a general feeling of pain or discomfort.
Muscle relaxation and stimulation
Once whiplash has been diagnosed by the chiropractor, there are several modes of treatments that can be undertaken. One of the most common is muscle relaxation and muscle stimulation. This involves well calibrated massage exercises on the back muscles to relieve them from strain and pressure and to help them return to normal. Depending on the severity of the case, a chiropractor can use light pressure or more focused pressure that can penetrate the underlying tissues in the back and neck.
Spinal manipulation
Another course of treatment for whiplash is spinal manipulation. As many studies have shown, the careful realignment of the vertebra can cure a variety of diseases and conditions, including whiplash. This is because of the sensitive nature of the spine. Because it houses the spinal cord, it is also one of the ways of accessing the spinal nervous system. When the vertebra is misaligned by just a few millimeters, severe pain as well as potential loss of muscle control can occur.
McKenzie Exercises
Exercises are also employed by chiropractors as an easy way of treating whiplash and other minor spinal injuries. These exercises can be easily taught to the patients, and once learned, can be performed inside the house or even in the office during breaks. These treatments are designed to return the sensorimotor functions of the spine and the body, and can help to realign spinal discs and vertebra that has been moved due to accidents or rough sports.
To each his own
Keep in mind that each individual experiences various degrees of whiplash. Because of this, treatment varies in intensity and frequency, and will require the help of a certified chiropractor. Once you find a good practitioner, however, it will only take a few weeks or a few months to gain full relief from the effects of whiplash.
As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Once you experience whiplash in an accident, do not wait for symptoms to complicate themselves and begin tormenting you. A visit to a chiropractor can be all you need to return your body to its healthy normal.
